Tourmaline Surfer's Memorial

Why a Surfer’s Memorial?
Tourmaline Surfing Park holds a unique position in California’s surfing geography. While similar to other popular beaches up and down the coast, “Tourmo” retains a unique quality all its own. Established in 1963 as a surfing “Park” the well formed waves have drawn scores of surfers to its shores since the 1930’s.

Beyond the waves, there is a subculture of camaraderie that is not found at most other surf spots. Drive the California coast and one sees pods of surfers at beaches from Swamis in northern San Diego to San Onofre in Orange country to Malibu in Los Angeles and on to Steamers Lane in the Santa Cruz area. Each location has their own cadre of “locals” who add character to the spot.

Likewise Tourmaline features a constantly evolving collection of individuals both young and old , male and female who have molded the personality of the park. From famous surfers like Skip Fry to pioneering legends Skeeter Malcolm and “Hadjy” Hein to the daily flock of students, doctors, lawyers, firemen, police officers, construction workers, teachers and business people, each adds to the mix of wisdom, humor and fellowship that the gathering seems to encourage. That egalitarian group of folks who are less interested in their fellow surfers profession, income or pedigree and more interested in the condition of the waves, the upcoming swell or how that pin tail board shape holds on a steep wave face.

The sense of camaraderie that Tourmaline Park has engendered should be encouraged and appreciated. It’s found at few other surf spots and it’s rarely found in any other sport. In fact, in a world replete with fear and suspicion we want our young surfers to realize how fortunate they are to share in the celebration of the wave riding tribes and want both tourists and new visitors who come to Tourmaline to gain a better understanding of the significance of the park and our sport.

How better to do that then with a Surfer's Memorial that celebrates the significance and aloha of Tourmaline.

How will the memorial be paid for?
The approximate price of engineering, construction and future maintenance of the memorial will be $60,000. We will solicit donations and direct contributions and will also sell commemorative bricks that will be inset around the memorial base and deck.

How will the Memorial be maintained?
A website will be established and referenced on the monument to provide additional information about the history of Tourmaline and to sell related merchandise. (T shirts, caps, decals, etc.) The site will be administered by volunteers as will the retail enterprise. Funds will be placed into a trust to be used solely for the maintenance of the memorial. Excess funds will be used for an annual picnic celebration at the Park and/or for future projects that will beautify or benefit Tourmaline Park.
